Vikings QB competition heats up, plus the Spurs force a winner-take-all Game 7

Vikings QB battle is the talk of the offseason. Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy are competing for the starting quarterback job, and their answers this week told very different stories. Murray described a supportive, friendly relationship, while McCarthy gave a noticeably cooler response, calling them "two guys in a classroom" — which everyone read as a hint that this thing is very much a competition, not a buddy movie. This will be the story all summer until someone wins the job.
The Twins are in the midst of their season — no major headlines today, but they're chugging along in the AL Central race. The Timberwolves and Wild seasons are both over. The Lynx and Minnesota United are in season but no breaking news today.
NFL
It's the quiet part of the NFL calendar (OTAs — basically optional offseason practices), but drama never stops:
- Rams QB situation is awkward. Los Angeles shocked everyone by drafting QB Ty Simpson in the first round last month, and now 38-year-old starter Matthew Stafford is publicly talking about helping the rookie learn. Translation: your job is being threatened and everyone knows it.
- Giants rookies had a political dust-up. Teammates Jaxson Dart and Abdul Carter publicly disagreed over Dart's involvement in a Donald Trump event, but they've since expressed unity. Sports and politics, always a fun mix.
- The 49ers might not break the NFL travel record after all — a scheduling tweak before their Mexico City game could save them some miles.
NBA
Spurs 118, Thunder 91 — San Antonio blew out Oklahoma City to force a Game 7 in the Western Conference Finals. Victor Wembanyama (the 7'4" French superstar) had 28 points and 10 rebounds. Game 7 is Saturday, and the winner faces the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. Yes, the Knicks — making their first Finals appearance in 27 years.
- Bad news for New York: Big man Mitchell Robinson reportedly broke his pinky finger and needed surgery. The Knicks won't say how it happened (which is weird!), and his Finals status is unclear.
- NBA Draft Lottery is changing. The league approved a new "3-2-1" system that reduces the advantage of being terrible — which benefits good teams who get a lucky bounce. The Thunder and Spurs stand to gain the most.
MLB
No blockbuster games to report, but two notable headlines:
- MLB proposed a salary cap and salary floor in negotiations with the players' union. This is a huge deal — baseball is the only major sport without a cap. The players have historically fought this tooth and nail, so don't hold your breath.
- Brewers reliever Abner Uribe was suspended for making an "inappropriate gesture" toward the Cardinals dugout after a strikeout. Even his own manager was annoyed.
NHL
Hurricanes 6, Canadiens 1 — Carolina absolutely demolished Montreal in Game 5 to win the Eastern Conference Finals and advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 20 years. They'll face the Vegas Golden Knights, with Game 1 on Tuesday.
- Heartbreaking news: Four-time Stanley Cup champion Claude Lemieux died by suicide at age 60. He was one of the most clutch playoff performers in NHL history.
College Sports
- Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby reportedly placed 40+ bets on Indiana games while he was the Hoosiers' quarterback. He's fighting the NCAA in court on Monday. This is a massive story in the college gambling saga.
- St. John's basketball keeps loading up under Rick Pitino — they added transfer Tounde Yessoufou and are now knocking on the door of the top 10 in early rankings.
- The Pac-12 is back! Sort of. The conference rebooted with Mountain West teams joining Oregon State and Washington State. Boise State is the early favorite.
Other Sports
- French Open shocker: 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca stunned Novak Djokovic in a five-set instant classic. Djokovic has won 24 Grand Slam titles; Fonseca is a teenager. The men's draw is now wide open.
- Champions League Final: PSG vs. Arsenal — Paris Saint-Germain is trying to win back-to-back European titles (last done in 2018 by Real Madrid), while Arsenal is chasing their first-ever Champions League trophy. The final is coming up soon.
- UFC Fight Night is Saturday: Song Yadong vs. Deiveson Figueiredo in Macau, streaming on Paramount+.
