Quiet day on the local front, but there's a bittersweet storyline: Karl-Anthony Towns, the Timberwolves' beloved former franchise centerpiece who was traded to New York last year, is arguably the best player in the NBA Finals right now (more on that below). Meanwhile, the Twins are plugging along in the middle of the AL Central race, the Wild are in their offseason, and the Lynx are in the early stretch of their WNBA season. No major Gophers or United news to report today.

NBA

The NBA Finals are halfway to a coronation — the New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2, taking a commanding 2-0 series lead. The Spurs have now blown double-digit leads in both games, and young superstar Victor Wembanyama (the 7'4" French phenom) had a nightmare finish, committing a crucial late-game turnover that evoked memories of a famous college basketball blunder. On the flip side, Karl-Anthony Towns — yes, the same KAT who played nine seasons in Minnesota — has been the best player on the floor and is the early favorite for Finals MVP. Game 3 shifts to Madison Square Garden on Monday.

Also: Elmo from Sesame Street tried to stay neutral about the series and Knicks fans were having none of it. The internet is funny.

NHL

The Stanley Cup Final delivered an absolute thriller on Saturday. The Vegas Golden Knights beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in double overtime in Game 3, but the story was the wild ride to get there. Vegas star Mitch Marner scored the fastest hat trick (three goals by one player) in Stanley Cup Final history to build a 4-0 lead — then Carolina stormed all the way back to tie it before Vegas defenseman Shea Theodore ended it in double OT. Vegas now leads the series 2-1.

MLB

The biggest baseball news is happening off the field. President Trump publicly called on MLB to implement a salary cap (a spending limit on player salaries), something the league has never had. This comes as team owners are meeting in New York amid rising tension with the players' union — the current labor agreement expires after the 2026 season. In on-field action, the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry continues its weekend series, and former top prospects like Roki Sasaki (the Japanese pitching star who came over last offseason) are starting to find their footing in the majors.

NFL

It's the dead of offseason, but that means hypothetical trade season. CBS Sports ran a fun exercise imagining blockbuster deals — the headliners being star pass rusher Myles Garrett to the Rams and wide receiver A.J. Brown to the Patriots. These aren't real (yet), but they're the kind of chatter that fills the summer void. Also, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (last year's #1 overall pick) was revealed as the cover athlete for the Madden video game, with a pose inspired by Michael Jordan's iconic Chicago silhouette.

College Sports

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey publicly shot down the idea that the SEC and Big Ten are plotting to form a "super league" that would break away from the rest of college sports. He called the rumor "not consistent with the truth." Separately, the NCAA denied Texas Tech's appeal to reinstate quarterback Brendan Sorsby's eligibility, a roster blow for the Red Raiders heading into next season.

Other Sports

🎾 French Open: 19-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva won her first Grand Slam title on Saturday, dominating Poland's Maja Chwalinska in straight sets. She's the youngest French Open women's champion since 1992. On the men's side, Alexander Zverev faces surprise finalist Flavio Cobolli on Sunday. In other tennis news, Serena Williams is coming out of retirement to play at Queen's Club in London next week — details are still sparse, but it's real.

🐴 Belmont Stakes runs Saturday at Saratoga. Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo is the headliner in the third leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.

🥊 UFC Fight Night on Saturday features former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad taking on rising contender Gabriel Bonfim in Las Vegas.
