It’s a relatively quiet Wednesday for our local squads, but the summer grind continues. The Twins are navigating the long MLB season, looking to string together wins as the weather heats up. Over in the WNBA, the Minnesota Lynx are battling through the middle of their regular season schedule. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves and Wild are enjoying a brief offseason break before gearing up for the NBA and NHL drafts, and the Vikings and Gophers are prepping for the start of summer training camps.

NFL

The biggest NFL story right now is a strange one: Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is entering the NFL's "supplemental draft" (a special off-cycle draft for players with unusual circumstances) amidst college gambling violations. His former school, Cincinnati, is firmly denying claims that they knew about his betting activity before letting him play. In much lighter news, the Jacksonville Jaguars are auctioning off the hilariously bad wig quarterback Trevor Lawrence wore for a viral schedule-release video last month. The video already has nearly 4 million views, and the auction is sure to be a fun fundraiser.

NBA

The NBA season has officially concluded with a historic milestone: The New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 to win their first NBA championship in 53 years! The game was a massive draw, averaging 24.5 million viewers and peaking at 33 million, making it the most-watched Finals Game 5 since 1998. Despite the huge win, Knicks owner James Dolan is already making headlines by saying he refuses to cross into the NBA's "second apron" (the league's harshest luxury tax penalty for high-spending teams) to keep the roster intact. Now that the season is over, the rumor mill is already spinning about where superstars like LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo might end up this summer.

MLB

The Los Angeles Dodgers have overtaken the Atlanta Braves for the No. 1 spot in this week's MLB Power Rankings. Atlanta held the top spot for five straight weeks, but the defending champion Dodgers are looking dominant once again. Over in college baseball, North Carolina crushed West Virginia 12-7 to advance to the Men's College World Series finals. WVU fans had completely taken over the city of Omaha, Nebraska for the team's first-ever appearance, but their incredible Cinderella run has finally come to an end.

NHL

In a surprising move, the Vegas Golden Knights announced that head coach John Tortorella will not return next season. Tortorella was hired with just eight games left in the regular season and miraculously guided the team all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. It's a quick exit for the veteran coach after an incredibly successful, albeit short, playoff run.

College Sports

With football season slowly approaching, early previews predict that Oregon, Ohio State, and USC are the frontrunners to dominate the Big Ten this year. Over on the basketball side, the Ohio State Buckeyes just landed a major early recruit in LJ Smith. Smith was a top-30 high school prospect for the class of 2027, but he decided to skip his senior year to enroll in college and play for the Buckeyes this upcoming season.

Other Sports

Soccer: The 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially underway! The US Men's National Team is dealing with a slight scare as their star player, Christian Pulisic, has missed recent practices due to a calf injury, though backup Brenden Aaronson says he's ready to step up if needed. Across the pond, all eyes are on a massive match today between England and Croatia. UFC: The UFC made history with a massive event at the White House over the weekend, where Justin Gaethje scored a major win over Ilia Topuria. The event almost had a dark cloud over it, as the FBI announced they arrested suspects who allegedly planned a terror attack against members of Congress attending the fights. Golf: The U.S. Open tees off this week at Shinnecock Hills in New York. Golf experts are heavily favoring Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, with McIlroy looking to finally conquer a course that has historically given him trouble.
