It’s a relatively quiet Sunday for our local squads, but the gears are definitely turning. The Vikings are less than a week away from reporting to 2026 training camp, joining the rest of the NFL as they prepare for the new season. Meanwhile, the Twins are surely keeping a close eye on the league as the MLB trade deadline approaches in just a couple of weeks. There are no major games or moves to report today for the Timberwolves, Wild, Lynx, United, or Gophers, but that will change quickly as summer winds down!
NFL
Football is almost back! Training camps officially open across the league this week, meaning teams will start figuring out who their starting quarterbacks and breakout stars will be for the 2026 season. In some off-field news, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley and his family are safe following a scary attempted home invasion at his house. Also, a Cardinals executive is appealing an indefinite suspension handed down by the league for violating the NFL's strict gambling policy.
NBA
The New York Knicks are still riding the high of their recent NBA Championship, celebrating with a fun WWE-style event at Madison Square Garden featuring stars like Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns. Over in the WNBA, the league suspended coach Sandy Brondello for one game after she was heard calling star rookie Angel Reese a "protected species." Reese accepted Brondello's apology but said she was really grateful the league took the situation seriously.
MLB
With the trade deadline just a couple of weeks away, rumors are flying that the Yankees, Mets, and Angels are all looking to make big moves to upgrade their rosters for a playoff push. Over in Chicago, the Cubs celebrated the 10-year anniversary of their 2016 World Series win by unveiling a new "Champions Gate" at Wrigley Field—former fan-favorite player Anthony Rizzo was even there to catch a home run in the bleachers!
NHL
With the hockey season on pause, a group of current and former NHL players spent the weekend at a Broadcast Training Camp in New York, practicing their TV skills to see if they have what it takes to become the next great sports announcers.
