Minnesota Teams

Hey Minnesota fans! We were on the edge of our seats, but the Timberwolves ultimately missed out on the LeBron James sweepstakes. He ultimately chose to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, but the fact that Minnesota was in the conversation shows they are viewed as a serious threat in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, locally, the Twins are grinding through the summer MLB schedule as the trade deadline approaches, but the biggest local headline this weekend is the 3M Open happening right in our backyard.

NFL

Training camps are officially opening, but there's some tough news out of Carolina. Panthers' second-year linebacker Nic Scourton was carted off the field on the very first day of camp with a torn ACL, meaning he will miss the entire upcoming season before it even begins.

There are a couple of major health updates to keep an eye on: Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes says he feels "amazing" and is fully cleared to play after having knee surgery in the offseason. On the flip side, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is trying to work his way back from a dislocated kneecap and torn ligaments, leaving his football future totally up in the air.

Off the field, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS broadcaster Tony Romo was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. In team news, the Green Bay Packers' CEO publicly questioned the franchise's financial viability, suggesting they might need a new economic model to stay competitive.

NBA

The biggest story in the sports world right now is LeBron James taking his talents to Philadelphia! The NBA's all-time leading scorer signed with the 76ers, choosing them over the Cavaliers, Heat, Warriors, and our very own Timberwolves. Philly suddenly has one of the most incredibly talented starting lineups in the league, completely shifting the balance of power in the NBA.

Over in the WNBA, All-Star weekend is in full swing in Chicago! Dallas Wings guard Azzi Fudd won the 3-point contest on Friday night and actually challenged NBA sharpshooter Steph Curry to a shootout rematch.

Away from the games, WNBA players and league officials held an important meeting to address a recent wave of racist and hateful online messages directed at athletes. During the festivities, Caitlin Clark and other All-Stars got to meet former President Barack Obama, who encouraged them to block out the "nonsense."

MLB

We are just days away from the MLB trade deadline, which is essentially a cutoff date where teams either trade away their best players to stock up on young talent, or trade for new stars to make a final push for the playoffs. Right now, several "bubble teams" (teams sitting right on the edge of making the playoffs) are deciding whether to buy new players or sell off their current ones to prepare for the future. Expect a lot of rumors and player movement over the next week!

College Sports

College football season is creeping up, and the always-entertaining Lane Kiffin was the center of attention at SEC Media Days. The new LSU coach mentioned that quitting social media has given him a fresh, positive perspective after leaving his old job at Ole Miss.

In other collegiate news, the NCAA's Division I Board announced they have no plans to change their new age-based eligibility rules. This is a big deal because several older athletes have recently been taking the NCAA to court to try and extend their college playing careers.

Other Sports

Golf's 3M Open is happening right now in Minnesota, and we witnessed history on Friday! Golfer Michael Kim shot a 12-under 59, making him just the 15th player in PGA Tour history to ever break 60 in a single round. He currently holds the lead, while the world's best player, Scottie Scheffler, has fallen a bit behind.

Over in international soccer, the English Premier League is about a month away from starting its new season. Teams are already buying and selling players in the transfer window, setting up what promises to be a wildly entertaining and competitive race for the championship.
